New Delhi: Nearly 63% of children in the 0 to six years group in Delhi suffer from anaemia. Pre-school education is available to only 2.7 lakh children in the three to six years group, out of the eligible 12 lakh. These figures are preliminary findings of an alternate report on the status of young children in India which was released on Monday.

This paper reviews recent evidence on food intake and nutrition in India. It attempts to make sense of various puzzles, particularly the decline of average calorie intake during the last 25 years. This decline has occurred across the distribution of real per capita expenditure, in spite of increases in real income and no long-term increase in the relative price of food.

Goa may have taken quite a few strides on the health front but, has not succeeded in wiping out malnutrition. It still remains a significant problem among children and adults.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan celebrated Makar Sankranti festival amidst children. He offered Laddus made of jaggery and linseed to children and flew kites with them. Chief Minister Chouhan gave away grants under various schemes to the elderly, handicapped persons and small girls during the festival organised by Women and Child Development and Social Development department.
