Food companies say the move will delay new product development and innovation

Probiotic ice-cream, digestive biscuits or lowsugar jams may be flying off retail shelves, but food companies are no longer being allowed to sell new products without taking approvals from the government-promoted Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). According to a new and modified FSSAI advisory issued to all food companies last month, any new or existing product which is ‘proprietary’ – in other words not classified in the food act – will need to follow a regulatory ‘new product approval’ guideline, as laid down by the FSSAI.

Free milk project for children held up for want of funds, says KMF chief

Milk unions in the State cumulatively owe as much as Rs 117 crore to dairy farmers, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairperson G Somashekhara Reddy has said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Reddy said the KMF has borrowed Rs 160 crore from HDFC Bank at 12 per cent interest to pay off the dues to dairy farmers.

Cabinet may clear proposal today to boost agri exports

In a major fillip to India’s processed food exports, the Cabinet is set to clear a policy under which processed foods from agricultural commodities such as wheat, rice, onion and milk would not be subject to any export ban or restrictions. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is set to clear the proposal on Thursday to exempt 14 types of processed food from the purview of export restrictions including oats, milk products, dehydrated onions, wheat and rice products.

A campaign to create awareness among the rural masses to help them overcome malnutrition has been launched in Hassan district by the Department of Information, Government of Karnataka.

Eight publicity units, 10-12 streetplay troupes and around 24 department officials, besides local publicity officers are engaged in the campaign. During the publicity campaign, eight publicity units are visiting two villages a day to cover all the 160 villages in eight taluks and are creating awareness on nutritional issues through streetplays, film shows, exhibition and folk songs, Assistant Director of Information of Mysore G Chandrakanth said on Sunday.
