Milk production is an important livestock-sector activity and it is estimated that nearly 150 million farm households throughout the world are engaged in milk production.

GUWAHATI, Aug 29

A plant producing cheese from goat milk will start production at Khajuraho in Chhattarpur district from first week of September. This will be the first and biggest plant in Asia and the cheese produced here will be exported to European countries. Agreements to this effect have already been signed. 300 persons will get direct employment at the plant.

More than 1,65,000 vials of spurious oxytocin were seized from medical stores in Sagar district's Bina town in the first week of this month, police said here today.

Oxytocin - misused for enlarging watermelon, gourd, brinjal, cucumber etc besides enhancing milk production in animals - is available in the market for Rs 15 per vial while the fake ones were being sold for 50 paise.

Jaipur: In what could probably be the first-of-its-kind in the country, a corporate organic dairy farm is coming up in the textile town of Bhilwara. Once complete this would be the only fully automated sterilised organic cow milk plant housing 1,500 cows at Raila in Bhilwara.
The plant has just started operations with 200 cross bred Holstein-Friesian cows.

The high-value agricultural segment, comprising livestock and fisheries, has to show higher growth for the farm sector to expand at a faster pace, the Planning Commission has said.

The livestock sector globally is highly dynamic. In developing countries, it is evolving in response to rapidly increasing demand for livestock products. In developed countries, demand for livestock products is stagnating, while many production systems are increasing their efficiency and environmental sustainability.
