90 Trees Cut Near Butler Palace

Lucknow: A Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Thursday restrained the state authorities from felling trees in the city for widening of roads. The court also asked if the authorities have any plan to plant new trees at alternative places to compensate for the trees cut down. Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice VK Dixit passed the order on a PIL against cutting of trees in the Butler Palace area and Tilak Marg on Dalibagh, but it is likely to come as a deterrent in other instances of tree felling as well. Wideninf of NH24, for instance, has already taken a toll on some 8,200 trees.

BDA, Govt Abusing Sec 14A: Plea

Bangalore: The Karnataka high court on Thursday directed the government not to grant permission for change of land use for properties situated in the metropolitan area of Bangalore city. “There shall be an interim order of stay of any further proceedings relating to change of land use under Section 14(A) of the KTCP in relation to properties within the metropolitan area of Bangalore city,’’ Justice Ram Mohan Reddy said in his interim order. This is in relation to a petition filed by CN Kumar, resident of Jayanagar, challenging section 14A of Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act (KTCP), 1961.

Bangalore: The high court on Wednesday directed all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police in the state to take action against illegal rearing, selling and transportation of banned fish.

A division bench headed by acting Chief Justice K Sreedhar Rao asked police to invoke Section 133 of Criminal Procedure Code and take stern action against illegal catfish rearing and to file a compliance report to the court within three months.

The plan of wildlife conservation led by then prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was chalked out in the year 2002 and the programme is being launched now 10 years later. Sohelwa wildlife sanctuary on the Indo-Nepal border was acquired by the government in 1988. Five ranges of the sanctuary are located in Balrampur district, including Tulsipur, Barahwa, Bankatwa, eastern and western Sohelwa, while two zones are in Rampur and Bhabhar of Shravasti district.

Court to hear plea against Raj HC order banning towers from public-use buildings

Beginning today, the country’s highest court will hear petitions filed by telecom-industry lobbies challenging a recent Rajasthan High Court order that directed telecom companies to remove cellphone towers from schools, hospitals, jails and heritage buildings in the state amid claims that tower radiation was harmful. Officials of two leading industry associations, representing mobile operators and telecom tower companies, feel the Supreme Court’s verdict in the case could set a precedent on where all towers can be located and how they operate.

BDA told to ensure space for garbage disposal in new layouts

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday informed the High Court that it has constituted 182 ward committees out of 198 wards in the City. The Court has asked the Palike to upload the names of the committee members on its website. Submitting the Palike report on the action taken to tackle garbage menace in the City, the counsel for the civic agency stated that some of the ward committees had already conducted their meetings.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed the government to take necessary steps for banning gutkha, pan masala and other tobacco products in the state and file a compliance report in this regard within a week. The directions were issued today by a Division Bench comprising Justice JP Singh and Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar.

The bench is hearing a PIL filed by Sajjad Gilani on behalf of the Jammu and Kashmir Voluntary Health and Development Association, wherein a ban has been sought on the manufacture and sale of gutkha and other smokeless tobacco products in the state.
