The paper presents an argument for increased cooperation amongst states in India for the purpose of effective and integrated disaster management. Disasters do not recognise political boundaries and even when they are localised, their after-effects spill over to other states in the Union.

For more than a century, humanity has started showing concern for the future of our planet. Natural resources like water reservoirs, forests, oil and gas fields have drawn attention of governments all over the world due to their limited capacity on the one hand and their rapid consumption on the other hand.

Forest cover assessment in India is being carried out using satellite remote sensing for more than two decades. In the present study an attempt has been made to map forest cover of Central India on 1 : 50000 scale using satellite data of 1970s.

The industrial development and growing population in India is in demand of more energy. Coal based thermal power generation is a major source of energy and is expanding at a very high rate leading to over exploitation of coal reserves, which is causing adverse impacts on the environment.

Overgrazing accelerates soil and vegetation degradation in rangelands. So, Livestock Population Density-i.e. allocated number of sheep per ha can serve as an index for measuring pressure on range environment. For this purpose, Sadra region has been selected as the study area, where it is located in the upper reaches of Maharlu basin, Fars Province, Southern Iran.
