Enable Block:

Under the Centrally-sponsored Nirmal Bharat Abiyan scheme it has been proposed to construct as many as 53,405 individual toilets in Villupuram district during 2012-2013, according to Collector V.Sampath.

Addressing a review meeting here the Collector said that the Centre had rechristened the Total Sanitation Programme as the Nirmal Bharat Abiyan. SHILLONG: Even though West Garo Hills district is the highest achiever in the State having done away with open defecation, it is still lagging behind in making schools ‘open defecation free’.

According to available statistics, 45 per cent schools in the district still lack sanitation facilities although during the year 2011 a total of 216 villages in the West Garo Hills were awarded the ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’.

Shillong: A roadmap drawn by the state in achieving Nirmal Meghalaya has shown an upward trend in the graph as far as the sanitation status or toilet average is concern with over 73 percent achievement, which is more than the national average, experts claimed.

Experts of the Water and Sanitation Programme-South Asia (WSP-SA) has claimed that the state can become Nirmal Meghalaya in a period of two years adding that Meghalaya is one of the leading states as far as implementation of Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) now known as Nirmal Bharat Abiyan (NBA) in rural areas of the state is concerned.

Poverty, delays in release of funds hamper ‘Total Sanitation Campaign’

Efforts to make the ‘Total Sanitation Campaign’ a success in the district appear to have lost momentum. Even after the State government has planned to increase the allocation of funds from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 per toilet, the rate of work has not increased. Officers blame residents for the delays. Members of the public, however, who have to put up the money for the construction before they can reimbursed by the government, complained of not having enough funds.

The main objectives of the NBA are as: Bring about an improvement in the general quality of life in the rural areas; Accelerate sanitation coverage in rural areas to achieve the vision of Nirmal Bharat by 2022 with all gram Panchayats in the country attaining Nirmal status; Motivate communities and Panchayati Raj Institutions promoting sustainab
