Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh on Sunday announced that his Ministry would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Defence for installation of bio-toilets in 1000 gram panchayats across the country. It would go a long way in improving sanitation in rural India, Mr.Ramesh said. The project will be implemented in coordination with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at a cost of Rs. 400 crore, which will be provided by the Union Rural Development Ministry, Mr. Ramesh said.

JAIPUR: Chief minister Ashok Gehlot has recommended that the state's Mukhya Mantri Gramin BPL Awas Yojana be extended across the country to grant the citizens a "right to shelter".

Gehlot made the suggestion to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, considering the scheme's popularity among Rajasthan's weaker sections. Gehlot earlier put forward the idea at a meeting of the western states' chief ministers with the planning commission in Mumbai. The scheme aims to fulfill the dream of people living below the poverty line (BPL) to own a house.

Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh give contrasting pictures of the sanitation story in the country. Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India had vide notification no. S.O. 2265(E) & S.O. 2266(E) dated 30th September, 2011, expanded the scope of works under schedule 1 Para 1 (ix) to include Access to Sanitation facilities and issued operational guidelines for these works.
