The urban renewal mission is likely to bypass or short change the urban poor

This study estimates the monetary benefits to individuals from health damages avoided as a result on reductions in air pollution in the urban industrial city of Kanpur in India. A notable feature of this study is that it uses data from weekly health-diaries collected from three seasons. For measuring monetary benefits, the study considers two major components of health cost--the loss in wages due to workdays lost and the expenditure incurred on mitigating activities.

The CDP aims at developing Srinagar as major tourist city by addressing the issues of ecological preservation, economic growth, poverty, good governance, development of infrastructure, improve traffic and transportation and delivery of basic services to the urban poor through a consultative process of strategizing and visioning.

As per 2001 population census 285.35 million people reside in urban areas. It constitutes 27.8% of the total population of the country. In post-independence era while population of India has grown three times, the urban population has grown five times. The rising urban population has also given rise to increase in the number of urban poor.
