Public Forum : Drowning In Garbage

Analysing the importance of solid waste management

Only 12 per cent of the 70 per cent of India's solid waste is treated, while the rest goes into landfills. Though there's a long way to go in treating the problem, people and co-operatives have started taking initiatives towards segregating and composting waste and developing a consciousness of not disposing waste indiscriminately.

Waste management is a huge challenge as well as a crisis for our country. Some cities have managed to put in successful waste management systems. The government evolved a new set of waste management rules that mark a significant shift. A survey by Centre for Science and environment has rated cities like Alleppey in Kerela, Panaji, Mysuru, Aizawl, Pune, Suryapet in Telangana and Surat as those that have made a significant leap forward and could become models for the country.

Indian cities are producing unmanageable amounts of garbage and solid waste every day. The figures are frightening. What can India do to solve its mounting garbage menace?

SAVE THE WORLD, is a funny take on how we fantasize about being a super hero and save the world, but what we forget is that we can save the world by doing our small bit, by RECYCLING. ACTONCLIMATECHANGE Film is shot and edited on Iphone6.

Vasudha Sharma gets us this inspiring report on how conscious developers and residents together can create zero waste green residential societies.
