The Economic Survey of India (ESI) 2017-18 was tabled in parliament marking the first business of this year’s budget session. The ESI document gives an account of the performance of India’s economy during the ongoing fiscal while also providing projections for the upcoming financial year 2018-19.

The 2017 Union Budget was broadly focused on 10 issues — farming sector, rural population, youth, poor and health care for the underprivileged, infrastructure, financial sector for stronger institutions, speedy accountability, public services, prudent fiscal management and tax administration for the honest.

The Economic Survey 2016-17, advocates the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as an alternative to the various social welfare schemes in an effort to reduce poverty.
