SYED AKBAR HYDERABAD March 21: A seven-km deep bore hole will be dug in Maharashtra to gain firsthand information about what causes earthquakes in "stable" areas.

The bore hole, the first of its kind in the world, will provide Indian geophysicists clues about the physical, geological and chemical processes and properties of earthquakes in real-time.

HYDERABAD: Do you know that cave deposits provide vital information on how the Southwest Monsoon behaved several thousand years ago?

That is what was found out by scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) by studying oxygen isotopes of the white or light brownish structures (stalagmites) found in different shapes and sizes in caves.

This Detailed Project Report has been prepared by Mott MacDonald to present the development of the proposed Luhri hydroelectric project on the Satluj River. The project lies downstream of the proposed Rampur hydroelectric project and upstream of the Koldam project which is currently under construction.

In many occasions severe water leakage problems are faced in shotcrete lined or unlined water tunnels that not only reduce stability of the rock mass but also result in loss of valuable water in conveying tunnel systems. Such leakage causes safety risks and increases the potential for huge economic loss to the hydropower projects.

Bhutan has an estimated hydropower potential of 30,000 MW and 12 TWh mean annual energy generation. So far 23,760 MW has been identified and assessed to be technically feasible. Only 1.488 MW,  i.e., 5% of the feasible potential is harnessed so far. Royal Govt.

The 720MW Mangdechhu Project is located on Mangdechhu River in Trongsa Dzongkhag (District) of Central Bhutan. The dynamic analysis for the Mangdechhu Concrete Das is still to be carried out and the site specific seismic design parameters are under vetting by the National Committee for Seismic Design Parameters (NCSDP), India
