Preliminary study on the ammonium-biocarbonate di-ethylene-triamine penta acetic acid extractable heavy metals and their relationship with different soil properties were observed in twenty-one surface samples of newly established location of S.K. University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, at Chattha.

heavy metals are seeping into Kolkata's groundwater from Dhapa, its waste dumping ground on the eastern fringe of the city. A study has found traces of chromium, zinc, cadmium and copper in areas

East Calcutta Wetland (ECW) is an example of wise use of cities solid and liquid waste through integrated resource recovery, mainly for pisciculture, vegetable as well as paddy cultivation and manure production. Amaranthus caudatus, Amaranthus blithum and Spinacia oleracea grown at ECW were analyzed for their accumulation of elements using Energy Dispersive X Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and compared to those grown in south eastern parts of West Bengal (Midnapur).

The importance of study of heavy metal distribution in river sediments is a component in understanding the exogenic cycling as well as in assessing the effect of anthropogenic influences of the elements. In India, the river Subernarekha flows over Precambrian terrain of Singhbhum craton in the eastern India.

This report presents the environmental profiles of metropolitan cities and problem areas identified by CPCB and their groundwater quality status. The groundwater quality data obtained during survey were evaluated against drinking water quality requirements [BIS 10500, (1991) & WHO (1996) Standards]. Salinity, nitrate, Coliform & Fluoride are the main water quality issues in the metro cities and problem areas of the country.
