The North Eastern states will get Rs 100 crore this year from the Agriculture Ministry to promote cultivation of rice under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM).

States with abundant natural resources and less economic activity are environmentally most sustainable in India, while it is just the opposite in the case of those with high intensity of economic activities, according to the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) here.

The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) for Indian States 2011, a study by the Centre for Development Finance under the 1970-founded IFMR, notes that the index for two years — 2009 and 2011 — shared this common characteristic.

Chennai Five north-eastern states along with Himachal Pradesh have been rated as the most environmentally sustainable states in the country, according to the Environmental Sustainable Index 2011 released today by a city-based think tank here.

The report rates Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh in the top slots in its Environmental Sustainable Index 2011. It was released by Centre for Development Finance (CDF), affiliated to Institute for Financial Management and Research.

New Delhi: Planning Commission on Wednesday finalised the annual plan for Manipur at Rs 3,500 crores for the year 2012-13.

This was finalised at a meeting between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and State Chief Minister Ibobi Singh on Wednesday. In his comments on the performance of the State, Mr Ahluwalia said the State has been performing satisfactorily. He said the infrastructure gap in the State needs to be bridged on priority. The Annual Plan for Manipur for 2012-13 was on Wednesday pegged at Rs.3,500 crore at a meeting here between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi.

During the discussions on the State's performance, Mr. Ahluwalia pointed out that while Manipur has been performing satisfactorily, the gaps in infrastructure needed to be bridged on priority basis and that the State government should encourage private participation in development of this sector.
