To unearth the priorities in Assam to cope with floods effectively, the prime objective of this research study is on assessment of the adaptation measures, structural and non-structural, to floods in three districts of Assam, viz. Dhemaji, Jorhat and Dhubri representing North Bank Plains, Upper Brahmaputra Valley and Lower Brahmaputra Valley, agro-climatic zones respectively. Bottom up approach was adopted to gather the quantitative data from various concerned departments and qualitative data by holding focus group discussions.

GUWAHATI: North East Girl Students’ Association (NEGSA) is organizing a symposium on “Problem and Prospect of Big River Dam in North East India” on January 13 at State Museum Auditorium in Guwahati.

NEGSA president Munmi Dutta said, “The seminar is organized to discuss various aspects of big river dams in Northeast and to create awareness amongst the general public about the various problems and possible benefits of construction of big river dams in Northeast”. “The symposium will provide an opportunity to the general public and specially students to understand various aspects of big river dam,” added the president.

The present study analyses the effect of a paper mill on epiphytic lichen communities in Barak Valley, Assam. Lichen thallus size, thallus number and frequency of occurrence, along with diversity of lichens at three levels (species, generic and family) are considered as variables to see the community composition across the distance from a paper mill.
