On Tuesday, Bhojan Yatra, a campaign demanding a comprehensive food security bill, reached here after travelling through Bihar, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

New Delhi The government is unlikely to take up the National Food Security Bill in the winter season of Parliament as the panel examining the proposed law had to be reconstituted as its tenure had lapsed.

The National Food Security Bill, 2011, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha by food minister KV Thomas in the winter session last year, was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee chaired by Vilas Muttemwar for approval.

NIFW general secretary Annie Raja said: “Even after three years of its rule, the present Government has failed to get the Food Security Bill passed which it had promised to do within 100 days. The Government clearly lacks the political will and social commitment which is the only reason to justify this delay.”

The Agriculture Ministry has asked the States to include millets in the mid-day meal scheme to increase the demand for the cereal and, thereby, enhance farm incomes.Millet crops or coarse cereals are known for their high nutritional value and are effective in controlling diabetes and obesity. But the area under millets has been steadily declining though they are suited for arid and semi-arid regions, besides adaptability to moisture stress.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday intervened in the Delhi assembly discussion on public distribution system during Question Hour and noted that her government agreed with the Opposition that there was corruption in the system and therefore it was “looking for ways to provide ration and cash transfers to the families in a proper way to ensure food security”.

After a number of BJP members had questioned Food and Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf on the issue of a large number of people being left out of the purview of the system, the Chief Minister said there was large scale diversion of kerosene and other supplies due to which the Centre decided to put a cap on the number of cards.
