GUWAHATI: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has demanded a financial package of Rs 10,000 crore from the Central government for the relief and rehabilitation works in the flood affected districts of Assam.

In a statement issued to the media here on Wednesday, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said the entire State has suffered heavy losses in the present floods ravaging several districts in upper and lower Assam. “Properties worth crores of rupees were destroyed in the current floods and several thousands of people have rendered homeless.

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the State has deteriorated on Sunday with 15 districts reeling under its impact. More than 8 lakh people have been affected in the current wave of floods. Sources said seven people have died in floods in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Chabua during the past one week.

The government has sounded an alert, as water level in most of the rivers in the State continue to rise owing to incessant rains in some upper Assam districts as well as in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

Heavy rainfall leading to flash floods in Himalayan rivers in July-end devastated three states — Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. It claimed 34 human lives and damaged property extensively. It also brought into focus the precarious condition of more than a dozen dams in the region.

Within just one week, starting August 1, these states received about half the rainfall they receive over an entire year—Uttarakhand received 44.6 per cent of its annual rainfall; Himachal 51.8 per cent and Jammu and Kashmir 55.6 per cent. Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region was the worst hit. The Bhagirathi, flowing much above the danger mark, washed away houses, hotels, roads and bridges. Nineteen labourers working on the Assi Ganga hydropower project in Uttarkashi were swept away by the river which they were trying to harness.

MARGAO: Saying that the village should be protected from soil erosion and other natural calamities, Cavelossim villagers on Sunday told the Captain of Ports not to go ahead with the dredging of mouth of River Sal till the stakeholders submit a detailed report, including Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the project.

The village panchayat has also decided to coordinate with the neighbouring Betul panchayat and other stakeholders how to go about the issue, even as the Captain of Ports has floated a tender to dredge the mouth of the river.
