The three-day State conference of the CPI (M) which concluded in Bhiwani on Monday passed a resolution lambasting the Haryana Government for its “senseless” land acquisition policy.

Haryana unit secretary Inderjit Singh said not a single Special Economic Zone had come up in the State even though the Bhupinder Singh Hooda regime had claimed that these, when set up, would generate employment for the people.

The Haryana government today said it was in talks with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL) to take back 1,383 acres in Gurgaon as the company has failed to develop the special economic zone over the same.

"Yes, we are in talks with Reliance [with regard to handover of the Gurgaon land to the state government] because it has not been able to set up the SEZ," Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said when asked whether the state government has asked RIL to return the land.

The Reliance India Limited (RIL) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Gurgaon is on its way to being shelved.

Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy of the High Court on Thursday directed the State government to clearly spell out its policy for acquiring large areas of land and giving it away in the name of petro-chemical corridors and Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The Judge expressed dismay how such huge extents are being given away and wondered how the large number of villagers who were displaced will be rehabilitated.

The contemporary debate on the SEZ policy has been quite fierce but the focus has been mostly on the issues pertaining to the establishment, sanctioning procedures, land grabbing and protests against the SEZ policy. In the melee, the major issue of economic utility (if any) of SEZs is forgotten or not bothered about.
