Plea to ban installation of towers on residential buildings

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Government, the Delhi Government and Hutchison Essar Mobile Services Limited on a petition by a man seeking a direction to stop installation of mobile towers on residential buildings and at public places, submitting that the radiation emitted by them was carcinogenic and his son had recently died due to it.

Replies sought by January 14, on health hazards in residential areas.

New Delhi: Claiming his son died of cancer caused by radiation from a mobile tower on the roof of his house, an east Delhi resident has moved Delhi high court seeking compensation.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Union Ministries of Environment & Forests, Petroleum & Natural Gas and Finance and the Central Pollution Control Board on a public interest litigation submitting that the sudden rise in the use of diesel cars due to the huge subsidy on the fuel had raised the pollution levels in the Capital and other cities in the country.

The petitioner, social worker A. Narayanan, urged the Court to pass directions to the Union Government to withdraw the subsidy to affluent sections of society and prescribe stringent emission standards on all appropriate parameters for diesel vehicles uniformly throughout the country to control the pollution.

In a communication to the various telecom associations, DoT said though it was open to dialogue and discussions, “the green technologies in the telecom sector have already been defined… any discussion in this regard with DoT shall not justify any delay or dilution of the implementation timeline.”
