Diesel engines power the dominant share of goods movement, construction equipment, and public transport vehicles in the global economy. This report presents a global strategy to reduce fine particulate (PM2.5) and black carbon emissions from the global fleet of on-road diesel vehicles. The strategy identifies 36 countries for immediate action.

Investing in ultra-low-sulfur fuel (ULSF, fuels with less than 10 ppm sulfur content) and clean vehicle technologies in India will not come without costs. But the benefits of these investments, in terms of reduced healthcare costs and higher productivity, far outweigh the costs. This paper discusses these issues in detail.

MARGAO: In a bid to control air pollution in the port town of Vasco and Margao, the district authorities have outlined a 16-point program to check increasing air pollution in the two towns, with a suggestion to make pollution check compulsory for all vehicles entering the State.

Diesel fumes cause lung cancer, the World Health Organisation declared Tuesday, and experts said they were more carcinogenic than secondhand cigarette smoke.

The WHO decision, the first to elevate diesel to the “known carcinogen” level, may eventually affect some American workers who are heavily exposed to exhaust. It is particularly relevant to poor countries, where trucks, generators, and farm and factory machinery routinely belch clouds of sooty smoke and fill the air with sulfurous particulates.

The power and energy ministry has decided to reduce the sulphur content level to 500ppm (parts per million) in diesel by 2013 from its present level of 2500ppm.

The decision was made at a meeting with the state minister for power and energy, Mohammad Enamul Haque, in the chair, following a request from the environment and forests ministry.
