This paper reviews the literature on the fiscal policy
instruments commonly used to reduce transport sector
externalities. The findings show that congestion charges
would reduce vehicle traffic by 9 to 12 percent and
significantly improve environmental quality. The vehicle
tax literature suggests that every 1 percent increase in
vehicle taxes would reduce vehicle miles by 0.22 to 0.45

Leading car manufacturers in India are expanding their fleets of alternative fuel vehicles to cash in on increased availability of compressed natural gas and to meet stricter emissions standards and increasing demand for cars that run on cheaper, more environmentally friendly fuels.

Transport sector is an essential driver of economic development and growth, and at the same time, one of the biggest contributors to climate change, responsible for almost a quarter of the global carbon dioxide emissions. The sector is 95 percent dependent on fossil fuels.

The U.S. biofuels industry would be hamstrung if government regulators choose to use unfair and untested formulas that hold it responsible for greenhouse gases from crops overseas, ethanol groups said on Thursday.

President Barack Obama's tough fuel economy program for vehicles could put another damper on the struggling ethanol business, because the alternative fuel packs a lower energy content than gasoline.
