Petroleum Ministry seeks setting up of an inter-ministerial group to draw up an action plan for pollution issues

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has sought setting up of an inter-ministerial Committee (IMC) with representatives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Urban Development and Public Enterprises and the Ministry of Environment and Forests to draw up a roadmap for reduction of pollution.

Code specifies if car maker fails to recall, govt can intervene

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) on Monday notified a ‘voluntary code on vehicle recall’ for passenger vehicle, two-wheeler and commercial vehicle manufacturers. It stipulates the conditions and procedures required to be followed on detection of any manufacturing flaws in products. However, unlike its counterparts in America, Europe or Japan, the guidelines do not include provisions for penalising auto makers in the event of non-adherence to the code.

In order to tune into a sustainable transport in the City, the State government should take some bold steps like banning free parking, said Prof T G Sitharam, Chairman, Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP), IISc.

Speaking at a seminar on “Green Economy: The way forward for sustainable public transport,” organised by the KSRTC, Sitharam said the first step needed was to ban free parking in the City. Also, congestion tax needs to be introduced in the Central Business District (CBD) areas, which would force commuters to use public transport, he said.
