BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (OMFED) is all set to launch a low fat content skimmed milk on September 20.

In a major shot in the arm for the Save-the-Cow movement spearheaded by the Sankalpit India Parivar (SIP) of Mewat, the ISKCON family of the USA has asked them to supply 20,000 litres of cow milk to them daily.

BHUBANESWAR: Even as genetic upgradation of cattle and buffalo to propel dairy development has emerged major thrust area, the State Government is waking up to lapses in many critical areas.

The erosion by Beki river has been creating devastation in some parts of Barpeta and Baksa districts for the last few years.

Severe erosion since 2004 has targeted the Barpeta Dairy Farm, among others, and almost 800 bighas of land out of 1800 bighas of land of the farm have been lost to the river till now.

Deficient rain this monsoon has affected milk production, particularly in the northern states of the country, driving up procurement cost of companies such as Mother Dairy and Amul by 10-15 per cent. Consequently, prices of dairy products such as ghee and skimmed milk powder (SMP) have also firmed up.
