Climate change and other environmental threats require urgent government action.

A 25% rise in food insecurity increases the risk of conflict by 36%, while a 25% increase in the number of people without access to clean water increases the likelihood of conflict by 18%, says Institute for Economics and Peace.

Due to the coordinated action taken by the various concerned departments on the eight action points of the "Action Plan for Rejuvenation of river Yamuna" the water quality of the river has improved in the period of January 2023 to September 2023. This is in comparison to the year 2022.

The Central Government has proposed a draft methodology for ‘Water Harvesting-based Green Credit’ under the Green Credit Rules, 2023. This draft was issued on 23rd October, 2023. The National Green Tribunal (NGT), October 20, 2023 dismissed the appeal filed against the environmental clearance (EC) dated March 9, 2020 granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in favour of M/s. Oil India Ltd. (OIL) for the proposed Onshore Oil and Gas Development Drilling and Production in Mechaki area. The area would cover Mechaki, Mechaki Extension, Baghjan and Tinsukia Extension PMLs (Petroleum mining lease) in district Tinsukia, Assam by OIL.

CETPs have not been established in the state of Sikkim. All industrial units have captive treatment facilities. The captive facilities in pharmaceutical formulation industries are equipped with Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring System (OCEMS). The OCEMS data is transmitted to the SPCB-Sikkim server on a real time basis for display in the SPCB's website for public information.

According to the applicant, brick kiln owners in an area in Muzaffarnagar district have done illegal mining of earth from the nearby agricultural fields by digging pits upto 15-20 feet and thereafter, the pits were abandoned. Those, abandoned pits got filled up during the rainfall and 5 children had died, who had accidently entered the pits filled with the rain water and mud.

The Central Government vide notification dated 12th October, 2023 has issued the Green Credit Rules, 2023. The primary objective of the Green Credit program is to encourage environmental conservation and sustainability through market-based mechanisms.
