This paper starts from an empirical observation that levels of hunger or food insecurity in middle-income and high-income countries are often higher than might be expected, and in some cases are rising rather than falling in recent years.

A food insecurity crisis is a health crisis, with a last- ing impact on the health of the displaced community. Health risks increase while access to healthcare is restricted. A significant increase in global and severe acute malnutrition among children in many internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugee settings has been recorded.

Throughout 2022 levels of food insecurity have continued to increase in Eastern Africa, with 82 million people who are suffering from hunger. In South Sudan, approximately 6.6 million people – or over half of South Sudan’s population – are projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity between October and November 2022.

This publication offers a synthesis of the major factors at play in the global food and agricultural landscape.

It is projected that nearly 6 million children aged 0-59 months have likely been suffering and will likely continue to suffer from acute malnutrition in the period of May 2022 – April 2023 in Northwest and Northeast Nigeria. This includes 1,623,130 Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases and 4,308,404 Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) cases.

This brief delves deeper into the relationship between food insecurity, gender inequality and gender-based violence (GBV). It highlights how investing in gender equality doesn’t just make women safer—it helps them access food, helps their families eat more, and can even increase their food production.

Availability of adequate and comparable data at one place for different States on various dimensions – economic, social and demographic – can aid in conducting relevant research on sub-national challenges, opportunities and feasible policy options.

This report compiles short-, medium- and long-term predictive analysis based on a range of data sources and methodologies developed from the perspective of different scientific disciplines and organizations. Taken together, they help to identify hotspots of interconnected risks across the Sahel region.

As food insecurity and global warming rise, governments, international development partners and industry should invest in sustainable food cold chains to decrease hunger, provide livelihoods to communities, and adapt to climate change, according to this new report by the FAO and the UNEP
