Mines Dept Sends Proposal For Minimum 3% Reservation For Widows Of Mine Workers

Jaipur: The department of mines and geology has submitted a proposal to the state government seeking reservation and preferential rights in allocation of mining leases to widows of mine workers who have died due to occupational diseases and accidents. According to the United Nations Human Rights Report- 2012, out of the total miners in the state, nearly 37% are women and most of them are dalits and tribals. Now, in a bid to provide definite source of livelihood such widows, the department has recommended a minimum of 3% reservation to them in mining leases.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs, e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, neurological diseases) have been the commonest cause of death and disability globally for at least the last three decades. Even in sub-Saharan Africa, NCDs contribute a third of the disability-adjusted life year burden. However, research resources allocated to NCDs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are trivial.

JAIPUR: The United Nations (UN) Human Rights report - 2012 gives an account of the unhealthy and exploitative conditions of mine workers in the state. Published by the working group on Human Rights in India and the UN (WGHR) for India's review at UN suggests that minimal wages, poor working conditions and lack of training are rampant in the mining sector in the state.

In its study WGHR found that more than 95% of mining activities in the state fall in the domain of unorganized sector. Out of the total miners almost 37% are women and most of them are dalits or tribals. The most concerning revelation is about the health status of the mineworkers.

Occupational Health Hazards refer to the potential risks to health and safety of workers in their workplaces. Tea garden workers are susceptible to a number of hazards in their workplaces due to physical, biological, mechanical, chemical and psychosocial factors. The present paper tries to examine the occupational health hazards faced by the tea garden workers of Hajua Tea Estate of Sibsagar District and Marangi Tea Estate of Golaghat District in Assam.
