Human-induced modifications on land and water are posing a serious threat to geo-environment in general and groundwater regime in particular along the fringe areas of most cities in the world.

This study used farmer-survey data, remote sensing, and hydrological modeling of the prevalent cropping systems to investigate the importance and role of the poplar trees within the agricultural landscape, and to estimate their water use. It was found that trees are currently grown on approximately 10% of the irrigated lands, which are located within the study area in northern India.

The satellite imageneries are used to map vegetative type, density, land use/land cover in Singrauli coal field area. Seven vegetation types of eight other land use/land cover classes observed have also been varified through field surveys.

Geographic Information System (GIS) was utilized to apply a modified DRASTIC method to assess the aquifer vulnerability to pollution of English Bazar Block of Malda District, West Bengal, India. In the western, central and southern parts of the study area the aquifer is prone to contamination. Therefore, in these regions pesticides, which may contain arsenic or arsenic rich groundwater, should not be used in irrigated land or mango orchards. In order to understand the reliability of the aquifer vulnerability, sensitivity analysis was carried out.

This study on bamboo was developed by FAO and INBAR jointly in the framework of FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005), with the aim of filling the gap in global information and providing a first, comprehensive assessment of the world’s bamboo resources.

Any reduction in water spread area at a specified elevation over a time period is indicative of sediment deposition at this level. This when integrated over a range of water stages helps in computing volume of storage lost through sedimentation. This study relates to estimation of capacity loss due to sedimentation of Hirakud reservoir, located in Orissa, India.
