Order of the High Court of Kerala in the matter of Suo Motu Vs State of Kerala & Others dated 06/10/2022.

The matter related to involvement of contract carriages in major accidents in Kerala and the passengers in those vehicles and other road users sustained serious injuries. Since the use of such vehicles on public place is posing potential threat to the safety of the passengers and other road users, the Assistant Solicitor General of India was asked to address arguments on behalf of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The report carries a comprehensive statistical analysis on variegated aspects of accidents and suicides in India. It offers country statistics for in-depth analysis of the factors related to accidents and suicides, and for formulation of policies for effective intervention.

Order of the High Court of Kerala in the matter of C. P. Ajithkumar & Others Vs State of Kerala & Others dated 08/08/2022.

The matter related to road accidents taking place due to bad condition of roads on the National Highway.

The Amicus Curiae (Vinod Bhat) brought to the notice of the court  that a person has  has died, falling into a pothole in the National Highway at Athani. Also, some stretches of the NH, particularly at Chalakkudy, Kodungalloor, Orumanayoor have developed huge craters and potholes.

In a report titled ‘Road accidents in India- 2020′, it has been highlighted that there has been a sharp decline in road accidents in 2020 as compared to 2019. The report has been released by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on February 25, 2022 has issued The Central Motor Vehicles (Motor Vehicle Accident Fund) Rules, 2022. This shall come into force on April 1, 2022.

Road safety is a sustainable development challenge for the Asia-Pacific region. The Global Status Report on Road Safety published in 2018 by the World Health Organization indicated that more than 60 per cent of the global road fatalities occurred in the Asia-Pacific region.
