Many of the systems intended to provide clean water for families in some of the world's poorest communities may not work. About 1.5 million children under five die of diarrhoea every year. While the highest number of deaths occur in Africa, of the total 38 per cent deaths that took place in South Asia in 2004, India accounted for the highest number of deaths. This has been revealed by a new report released by the United Nations and World Health Organisation (WHO).

Diarrhoea is a major killer in India claiming the lives of about 1,000 children below five years of age everyday.

Worldwide diarrhoeal diseases and acute respiratory infections are responsible for the deaths of more than 3.5 million children below five years of age each year.

BALASORE: Three persons, including a woman and two children, have died of diarrhoea within last couple of days in Mukhura panchayat under Remuna block of Balasore district. The deaths have been reported from two tribal hamlets.

The deceased have been identified as Sita Singh of Gourapur and Kuni Singh and Buni Singh, daughters of Banguru Singh, of Nuapadhi village.
