SHILLONG: Realising the importance of water for both human and animal life, the proposed draft document of the State Water Policy has laid emphasis on the need to regulate exploitation of ground water resources.

“There should be a periodical reassessment of the ground water potential on a scientific basis taking into consideration the quality of the water available and economic viability of its extraction,” the draft document prepared by the State Government, which is available on the official website of the Water Resources department, states.

Delhi Government bans cutting of all roads from June 30

The Delhi Government has issued a flood control order, operationalised a central flood control room and banned cutting of all roads from June 30 as part of its initiatives and preparations for the monsoon this year. Chairing a meeting of the Apex Committee for Flood Control 2012, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit directed all civic agencies and departments on Thursday to work in tandem for ensuring that there is no loss of life or property due to floods.

In a representation, Federation secretary Karmangudi S. Venkatesan said Cuddalore district, by virtue of its geographical location, was acting as a drainage point for rainwater run-off originating from the districts of Salem, Erode, Karur, Namakkal, Tiruchi, Ariyalur and Perambalur.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid the foundation stone of the Assam Integrated Flood and River Erosion Risk Management Project at Jahirpur village in Gumi. The Rs 172.35 crore project at Gumi is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

After laying the foundation stone for the project, Gogoi said that the Gumi project would be another milestone in the controlling of erosion and flood problems in the State.
