For the residents of the city battling traffic congestions every day, there could still be some hope. The State government on Thursday announced that it would take up a study on multi-modal integration of transport in Chennai this year.

Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam, in his budget speech, underscored the need for a combination of different modes of transport such as buses, suburban trains, Metro Rail and monorail, and also new innovative systems such as the Bus Rapid Transport System, which virtually remains a non-starter in the city.

PUNE: The much-delayed Pune metro rail project got a funding of Rs 10.01 crore in the Union Budget on Thursday. The Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations, that have proposed the project in association with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, have already made provisions in their respective budgets for the year 2013-14.

The budgetary head, 'Pune Metro', figures in the list of projects of the urban development department for the first time this year in budget. The total funding of Rs 10.01 crore has been bifurcated into three components.

Old Proposal Of 2 Corridors Scrapped

Lucknow: The much-awaited report of the department of urban planning on the proposed Metro project in the city has made radical changes in the original plan. While it has totally done away with the ‘two corridor’ concept and instead recommended a dense network of Metro connectivity in the city, the entire route has been proposed to be built overhead to save cost. Government sources told TOI that the revised route can reach even to the interiors of the city.

The Uttar Pradesh government unveiled the Budget for 2013-14 in the state assembly on Tuesday, estimating a total expenditure of Rs 2.21 lakh crore. Mayawati's BSP, the main opposition party, staged a walkout alleging that more than 75% of last year's Budget remained unspent.

“The state will move ahead with this budget and the target of making UP ‘Uttam Pradesh’ (excellent state) will be achieved,”Akhilesh told reporters here. "Through this budget, we have made effort to provide maximum benefit to all sections of the society, including farmers, youths, Muslims, women and poor," he said. The Budget, presented by the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav who also hold the finance portfolio,showed a 9.8% increase from last year's size of R2 lakh crore.

To enhance the 150-km long metro network in the city, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transport for London (TfL), UK's transport authority, on Monday.

The partnership will seek to facilitate exchange of information and personnel for transfer of latest technology in the area of transportation, said a statement issued by MMRDA. "The MoU seeks to set up a co-operative framework of co-operation between the two sides for Metro development and operation," it said.

These rules may be called the Metro Railways General Rules, 2013 and Opening of Metro Railways for Public Carriage of Passengers Rules, 2013. These rules shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.

Kochi: The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will focus on addressing transport issues in the upcoming budget.

Briefing the media on pre-budget discussions in Kochi on Monday, GCDA chairman N Venugopal said that various transport projects, including the ring road and water transport projects, would be given importance in the budget. GCDA will send a letter to the state government requesting that the development body be made the nodal agency for coordinating various water transport proejcts in Kochi.
