Carbon market participants on Tuesday said revisions to key rules may not be enough to ensure that trading in secondary offset markets in California is liquid and stable.

The USA on Thursday assured Bangladesh of continued support to environment protection, conservation of forests and low carbon development to combat adverse impacts of climate change.

In the last decade, countries have committed major resources to reducing carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD). A debate continues on how REDD financing should include related activities, such as the enhancement of carbon stocks through afforestation, reforestation and rehabilitation of degraded lands.

International carbon offsets fell below 10 euros per metric ton for the first time since March 2009 early on Monday morning, but traders were unsure whether carbon prices were poised to drift lower or stage a rally.

A combination of slim buying and continued jitters over the economic outlook have seen carbon prices lose a third of their value in the past four weeks.

Community forestry has been rewarded with US$ 95,000 (approximately Rs 6.8 million) for reducing emissions in the atmosphere causing climate change through enhancement of carbon stocks and sustainable management of forests.

Rising forest density in many countries is helping to offset climate change caused by deforestation from the Amazon basin to Indonesia, a study showed on Sunday.

The report indicated that the size of trees in a forest -- rather than just the area covered -- needed to be taken into account more in U.N.-led efforts to put a price on forests as part of a nascent market to slow global warming.

As the impacts of climate change escalate, efforts to develop new technologies and new approaches to reducing emissions are promoted. One proposal is to sequester carbon in soils using biochar. Biochar is essentially fine grained charcoal.

Carbon Fat Cats 2011 sets out the analysis of those companies profiting most from Europe’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The results matter because of their bearing on a crucial debate being held in Europe and the wider world – a debate about how to respond to profound challenges created by the economic dependence on fossil fuels, in particular the threat to a stable climate.

For five years, Forest Trends’ Ecosystem Marketplace and Bloomberg New Energy Finance have published the State of the Voluntary Carbon Markets Reports to shed light on trading volumes, credit prices, project types, locations, and the motivations of buyers in this market.
