Asks FCI to speed up movement of stocks

The Punjab Food and Supplies Department has requested the Centre to allow border trade of wheat to Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Wagah land route to clear the huge wheat stocks lying in the state.

The horticulture sector encompasses a wide range of crops e.g., fruit crops, vegetable crops, potato and tuber crops, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic crops, spices and plantation crops. India, with its wide variability of climate and soil, is highly favourable for growing a large number of horticultural crops. It is the fastest growing sector within agriculture.

In order to meet increasing demands of food due to rising population and income, food production in India and other south Asian countries need to be increased. Rain-fed agriculture in India, practiced on 94 million hectares (M ha), is considered a major source of production increase in future.
