Higher temperatures will kill forests. So much for sinks Trees

This report shares research-based lessons about the catalysation, practice and outcomes of an adaptive collaborative approach to community forestry in Nepal. It focuses on the community forest user group (CFUG) and meso levels, that is, the multistakeholder interface at the subdistrict and district levels.

The Maharashtra Forest Policy 2008 aims at raising forest cover in the state to a minimum of 33% (101.54 lakh hectares) of total land, as per the recommendations of the Planning Commission and the National Forest Policy, 1988. At present, the forest area in the state is around 20 per cent. Of this 56 per cent is in Vidarbha, five per cent in Marathwada and 39 per cent in western Maharashtra.

Hyderabad, June 30: What do trees and plants have to do with the research output of an institution? Scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad believe that greenery on their campus is helping them produce more research papers than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. The NGRI has about 16,400 trees on its campus at Habsiguda. It is going to lose about 300 trees to road widening which the institute plans to compensate by planting 4,000 trees.

Importance of forests has been increasingly emphasised in the climate change mitigation process, as forests are treated as an integral part of international agreements dealing with the climate change alleviation. It reviews current deforestation rates and the associated issues related to monitoring forest-based carbon emissions and establishing baselines. The findings of research into the direct and underlying causes of deforestation and degradation provide a basis for outlining REDD policy options, while highlighting the associated challenges.
