The natural gas industry has enjoyed something of a winning streak in recent years. It found gigantic new reserves, low prices are encouraging utilities to substitute gas for coal, and cities are switching to buses fueled by natural gas.

Chinese solar-cell maker Canadian Solar Inc said on Wednesday it obtained development rights for a 500 megawatt (MW) solar power plant system in China.

The news makes Canadian Solar the latest Chinese solar manufacturer to unveil plans for a large solar power project in China since the country last month launched a long-awaited plan to offer subsidies for the industry.

Solar company LDK Solar Co Ltd said on Tuesday it is partnering with the Chinese city of Yancheng to build up to 500 megawatts of photovoltaic solar power projects over the next five years, sending its shares up 6.2 percent in extended trading.

China started construction of the country's first 10-gigawa wind power base in Jiuquan of northwest Gansu province on Saturday as Beijing seeks more clean power to fuel its fast economic growth.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency did a reasonable job in estimating the U.S. biofuel industry's role in causing greenhouse gas emissions overseas, but some of the work was problematic, a scientific review panel concluded on Friday.

It's an odd week for fuel sources. On the heels of a Mountain Dew powered engine, UK supermarket Tesco is getting flack for turning meat into energy-yah, you read that right.

The food chain is burning 5,000 tons of inedible meat for fuel. The biomass processing is being handled by the Cheshire-based PDM Group. The meat-energy is then used to power UK homes via the National Grid.

China is keen to halt growth in its greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible, but lifting tens of millions out of poverty must remain its primary goal, the country's climate change ambassador said on Wednesday.

Investment in clean energy technologies in developing countries is a key component of achieving global commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. One mechanism to promote investment in energy efficiency technologies is through energy performance contracting (EPC) undertaken by Energy Service Companies (ESCOs).

The report, "Environmental and Energy Sustainability: An Approach for India", identified clean power and energy-efficiency measures as having the largest potential impact on emissions, with the capability to reduce CO2 output 28 to 34 per cent by 2030.

The assessment of energy and greenhouse gas balances is part of a larger effort by UN-Energy to provide decision making tools and aids to Governments and others involved in the planning and implementation of bioenergy development.
