KOLKATA, April 2: After the state government rejected a proposal by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) to acquire 2,500 acres of land for dumping dredged soil near Nandigram, the port authorities have urged the Centre to help them purchase land for the process.

Pollachi: Residents and farmers of Mappillai Goundenpudur near Pollachi staged a demonstration in the village in protest against pollution caused by an industrial unit.

The demonstrators led by M.S. Gnana Janarthan, representative and co-ordinator of the struggle committee, said that activated carbon manufacturing unit located in the village was causing air and water pollution.

A study on land degradation in the upper catchment of river Tons, a tributary of Yamuna river, in Uttarkashi district of the Uttarakhand state, was carried out using on-screen visual interpretation of IRS LISS-III + PAN merged data.
