The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has planned another waste-to-energy plant in Shastri Park. The land allotment by the Delhi Development Authority for the project is under process.

EDMC Commissioner Sajjan Singh Yadav said: “Initially we had requested for land to be allotted to us but were told there is no available land in East Delhi which is suitable for a sanitary land fill site. We also believe that land fill sites are not the long term solutions.”

A solution to the vexed problem of solid waste management in the city seems distant as the government continues to be in the dark on the technology to be adopted at the proposed new plant in Brahmapuram.

Efforts to initiate a waste-to-energy plant based on incineration method have backfired after the three companies that submitted the final bids informed that only 14 units of power could be generated from one tonne of waste.

Bengaluru: There seems to be no respite from the garbage crisis for citizens of Bengaluru as well as villagers of Mandur as city in-charge minister R. Ashok and Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar have so far not been able to come up with effective alternative steps.

The BBMP Commissioner, Siddaiah, has even hinted that alternate measures to tackle garbage would take at least three months to roll in and dumping of garbage at Mandur landfill might extend beyond February.

The waste generation in City has come down from 4,000 tonnes a day to 3,600 tonnes thanks to hoteliers who are disposing the waste themselves.

The BBMP took everyone by surprise when it submitted before the Karnataka High Court that the waste generation was 3,600 tonnes a day. Earlier, it had claimed that the waste generation was somewhere between 4,000 tonnes and 4,400 tonnes a day. Ananthaswamy, Chief Engineer, BBMP (Solid Waste Management) said the average waste generation had come down to 3,600 tonnes because of a series of measures taken by the Palike for scientific disposal of the waste.
