The high altitude lakes are fed by snow-melt, precipitation and springs whereas lakes of lower altitudes receive water from local rains, through streams, Nalas and springs. Many large lakes of Lesser Himalaya are fault basin lakes formed due to tectonic activity resulting in blocking of the streams/rivers during Holocene period.

This study has been done to understand the impact of implementation of Forest Rights Act on the change, after 2005, in tree cover/vegetation and land use in the forest lands under Forest Right’s claims as well as in those with finally recognized ‘Forest Right’ of cultivation.

BHUBANESWAR: Under the microscope for allegedly engaging in illegalities, several mine owners on Wednesday raised objections before the Justice M B Shah Commission to the manner in which boundaries of mines were determined using satellite images.

Various miners, represented by prominent lawyers, strongly pleaded before the inquiry commission for a fresh physical verification of the boundaries of different mines.

An Indian rocket carrying seven satellites — the Indo-French satellite SARAL, world’s first smart phone-operated nano satellite, a space telescope satellite and four other foreign satellites — on Monday blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, around 80 km north of Chennai.

A little after 6 p.m., the rocket — Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle—C20 (PSLV-C20) — standing 44.4 metres tall and weighing around 230 tonnes hurtled towards the skies ferrying seven satellites to sling into orbit.

Spatially accurate, contemporary data on human population distributions are vitally important to many applied and theoretical researchers. The Southeast Asia region has undergone rapid urbanization and population growth over the past decade, yet existing spatial population distribution datasets covering the region are based principally on population count data from censuses circa 2000, with often insufficient spatial resolution or input data to map settlements precisely.

Glacial lake is a water body formed in/under/besides and/or in front of a glacier due to glacial dynamics. Such high-altitude glacial lakes are hazardous to humanity and infrastructure as they can drain instantaneous and create devastating floods in the downstream. The formation of moraine-dammed glacial lakes and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is major concern in countries such as Bhutan, Tibet (China), India, Nepal and Pakistan.

Emissions from landscape fires affect both climate and air quality. This study uses satellite-derived fire estimates and atmospheric modelling to quantify the effects on health from fire emissions in southeast Asia from 1997 to 2006. Strong El Nino years are found to increase the incidence of fires, in addition to those caused by anthropogenic land use change, leading to an additional 200 days per year when the WHO atmospheric particle target is exceeded and increase adult mortality by 2%.

Climate change causes global mean sea level to rise due to thermal expansion of seawater and loss of land ice from mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets. Locally, sea level can strongly deviate from the global mean rise due to changes in wind and ocean currents. In addition, gravitational adjustments redistribute seawater away from shrinking ice masses.

The Kanwar Lake in Begusarai district is one of the Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake and eco-friendly natural lakes which attracts a variety of migratory birds. It has been shrinking at an abnormally high rate. Despite being designated as wildlife sanctuary, this wetland is under threat from anthropogenic pressures.

This report discusses various observed weather and climate features of 2012 southwest monsoon and verification of operational and experimental forecasts for rainfall at various spatial and temporal scales during the seasons.
