The bicentenary of Charles Darwin's life and work reminds us that the great biodiversity on Earth underlies natural selection, selective breeding, and the biotechnologies required to provide humanity with food, fiber, fodder, and fuels.

Report of the Expert Committee on draft CMZ notification chaired by M S Swaminathan submitted to Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh. Recommendations of this committee have been accepted and CMZ 2008 Notification, 2008 lapses on July 22, 2009.

The present article reflects the author's authority and perception as how India should work towards sustainable food security.

India, with its vast infrastructure in agricultural research and education, is best placed to usher in an era of hope in the lives of the Tamil farm and fisher families.

The concept of food security has evolved during the last three decades to include not only food availability, but also economic access to food and the biological absorption of food in the body. The author discusses in this paper the challenge of achieving sustainable advances in farm productivity, leading to an "ever-green revolution" in the fields of farm families with small holdings.

Climate change has a profound impact on the dynamics of agricultural and natural ecosystems, particularly sustainability of agricultural biodiversity.
