Coastal livelihoods in SW Bangladesh are largely dependent on its natural resources of mangrove forest (timber, wood fuel, honey, fish and other aquatic species) agriculture and marine fisheries. Following construction of the coastal embankment and other development investment there have been drastic environmental changes.

The Indian marine and coastal biodiversity is under serious threat from developmental projects, according to experts at the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Though India has a 7500-km coastline, which supports almost 30 per cent of its population in biological and economic wastelands, the coastal and marine stretch in India is coming under unprecedented threats from various development projects including ports, power plants, ship yards and aquaculture.

Compensatory production plan strategizes enhanced production in the normally sown rabi and special boro/summer season crops particularly in the flood prone areas. High rainfall and better soil moisture during the extended terminal part of the rainy season 2012 provides ample opportunities to improve productivity in the rainfed region.

This policy brief is largely based on the World Atlas of Mangroves (2010) which provides a wealth of knowledge on the ecology, biodiversity, distribution, economic value, and management status of mangroves around the world.

SHILLONG: The State Government is planning to explore a new domain of tourism with the development of fish sanctuaries across the State.

“We are planning to construct 100 fish sanctuaries in the next two years with an aim to promote tourism through them,” Principal Secretary of Fisheries department KN Kumar said while addressing a one-day conclave on Aquaculture Development in the Northeastern region here on Tuesday. According to Kumar, the Government would tie up with the fish farmers across the State in developing the proposed fish sanctuaries.

SHILLONG, Sept 11 – The Centre is planning to double the fish production in North-eastern region and aims at increasing its per capita availability to 15 kg by 2020.

Prawn and fish farming is an important source of income and employment for the local populace in the Sunderban region in West Bengal. These have led to a dynamism in the local economy in these areas. The results of this study suggest that the impact of this development has been skewed, whereby a small section of the population with access to capital has enjoyed substantial benefits and a large majority of the population was left out of the development trajectory.

Digging up earthworms, chasing butterflies and collecting clam shells could become a thing of the past if enough isn’t done to protect invertebrates. And if they disappear, humans could soon follow.
