UN Food and Agricultural Organisation is calling for a new World Food Summit for 2009.

World foodgrain production is anticipated to drop in 2009-10 largely due to reduced area sown with these crops by farmers in the developed countries in response to a sharp fall in international cereal prices.

Some of the cereal acreage is likely to shift to oilseeds which offer prospects of better returns with lower production costs.

Even as the prices of food items in the international market dropped sharply from their peak in 2008 in response to higher global stocks and improved export supplies, food prices in most of the developing countries have defied this trend and remain high. This has constrained the economic access to food for the poor.

Federal government is planning to get rid of a two-year ban in August, imposed by European Union on the country's seafood export, as it has decided to send to EU an action plan in mid June to invite its officials for inspection of harbour, processing units and boats in mid July this year.
