The mysterious deaths of 14 deer in Kanpur's Allen Forests Zoo on September 12 was lost in Mayawati's latest statue-and-park drive. Even a missive from Union Minister for Forests and Environment Jairam Ramesh failed to evoke a response from the chief minister's office.

Sept. 13: Seven officials of the Kanpur zoo have been suspended following the mysterious deaths of 13 spotted and one swamp deer on Saturday.

The deer were found dead in their enclosures on Saturday and there was no visible sign of any injury on their bodies.

The post-mortem carried out by a team of vets also could not ascertain the exact cause of death.

It's a battle of the bulge in major cities of Uttar Pradesh. Supply-led water deprivation prevails in major cities in India. The per capita water availability in these cities is nowhere near the standards laid down by the World Health Organisation or the Bureau of Indian Standards (1993), and it is also far lower than that in other large cities in the world.
