With only 0.05% of the total area of the country, Delhi is home to 1.34% of India's population. This creates enormous pressure on natural and man-made resources, and generates situations in which non-health determinants may take precedence over the conventional determinants directly associated with health and health care.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) International Transport Forum (ITF) has published a discussion paper titled “Key Mobility Challenges in Indian Cities,” which identifies challenges in urban mobility in India under three sections: urbanization and transport; urban mobility challenges; and current policies and interventions.

The government has started preparations to remove public vehicles over 20 years old from across the country in its bid to make public transport system safe and reliable. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) is currently carrying out homework in this regard.

There are an estimated 60,000 public vehicles in the country. Around 10 percent of these vehicles are over 20 years old.

Ahmedabad: The most accident-prone area on SG Highway is not pedestrian-safe too. It is also confusing for the traffic that comes from outside the city due to lack of proper signage and demarcated service lanes.

Dec. 15: Trucks and two-wheeler accidents make up more than 50 per cent of the fatal road accidents that took place in Vijayawada police commissionerate limits this year since January, 2010.

Truck accidents comprise 36 per cent of the total fatalities while the two-wheeler accidents are 16 per cent of the total deaths.

The high mortality and morbidity associated with road traffic injuries are a major public health challenge worldwide. Every year, road traffic crashes kill an estimated 1.2 million people.
