Sri Lanka Ministry of Environment is to develop the wetlands around the parliament and in Battaramulla area as urban gardens.

According to the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Patali Champika Ranawaka this project is to be implemented under the programme of Green Circle introduced by the Ministry.

However, development activities are not always compatible with the conservation of this diversity and it is poorly represented within the development planning process.

This paper summarises the importance of wetlands in relation to climate change, as a basis for examining their potential role in the measures for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) being discussed under the Kyoto Protocol. The question is addressed also in relation to relevant aspects of other intergovernmental agreements.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has conveyed its objections to the Centre on the draft Regulatory Framework for Wetlands Conservation notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The Asian Waterfowl Census in wetlands of BTAD coinciding with the International Wetland Day recently has revealed interesting data.

This year the annual counting exercise was undertaken in Diplai enabling the sighting of 1112 birds, and Sareshwar, where 3258 birds were spotted. In Dhir beel a total 3955 birds were recorded.

The International Wetland Day was celebrated throughout the world on February 2. If one goes by the wetlands in Uttar Pradesh, it is a bleak scene altogether. According to the 1996 report of the Remote Sensing Centre, the total number of wetlands in the state were 2508 but they are also disappearing at the rate of 1.2 per cent per year.

Mumbai: Dotted with estuaries, marshlands and rivers and surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea, Mumbai, with its own coral reef, is truly a city of wetlands. But they are disappearing fast, losing out to development.
