More than 60 percent of the population of Nairobi lives in the numerous slums located around the city. Kibera slum is one of the 146 slums of the Kenyan capital and the second biggest slum in Africa (after Soweto in South Africa). Around one million people are currently living in Kibera and the population is increasing daily.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh established the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), in the year 2000, to bring light into the lives of the rural poor. It implements two poverty reduction projects with an amount of Rs. 2000 crores. SERP's current programmes reach year by 80 lakh households of Andhra Pradesh. It is the single largest rural development programme run by government.

The Acholi region of northern Uganda (Kitgum, Pader and Gulu districts) has been affected by rebel activities since 1986. Due to the constant crisis and erratic security situation, access to food, income, and productive assets for the population has become increasingly difficult over the years.

Urban agriculture is one of the alternative strategies initiated to improve their food security, but also to enhance the social inclusion of the women involved, who have more time available than the men and who can develop additional skills through this activity.

The term, 'environment', has many connotations. In this paper, by 'environment' we mean the natural environment, which encompasses all the biotic and abiotic elements that form our surroundings, that is, the air, the land, the water, the forests, the seas.
