MV QING, with 350 tonnes of oil, and the grounding of floating WISL dry dock, increase risk of oil spillage; gross negligence by authorities, claim environmentalists

Temporal variations in aerosol optical properties were investigated at a coastal station in Hong Kong based on the field observation from February 2012 to February 2015. At 550 nm, the average light-scattering (151 ± 100 Mm−1) and absorption coefficients (8.3 ± 6.1 Mm−1) were lower than most of other rural sites in eastern China, while the single-scattering albedo (SSA  =  0.93 ± 0.05) was relatively higher compared with other rural sites in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region.

CHENNAI: Dead turtles and fish floated on the sea at Ernavur, near Ennore, a day after the fuel tank of an oil tanker ship burst following a collision with an LPG carrying vessel.

The impact of black carbon emissions on human health and climate are of global interest. Despite this, black carbon emission factors for marine engines and fuels are uncertain because of the challenges of measuring black carbon emissions.

As a major global economic driving force, the transport sector –and in particular the automotive sector– has provided employment and shaped technological progress over the course of a century. This is true for Germany as much as it is for China. Daunting climate and environmental concerns have cast a large shadow on this development.

The present edition of the Review of Maritime Transport takes the view that the long-term growth prospects for seaborne trade and maritime businesses are positive. There are ample opportunities for developing countries to generate income and employment and help promote foreign trade.

The observed decline in Arctic sea ice is projected to continue, opening shorter trade routes across the Arctic Ocean, with potentially global economic implications. Here we quantify, using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 global climate model simulations calibrated to remove spatial biases, how projected sea ice loss might increase opportunities for Arctic transit shipping. By midcentury for standard open water vessels, the frequency of navigable periods doubles, with routes across the central Arctic becoming available.

Although efficient ships save shipowners money on fuel, they do not attract green premiums or preferential contracts, research suggests

Judgement of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Samir Mehta Vs Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change & Others dated 23/08/2016 regarding marine pollution caused by the sinking of ship (M.V. RAK) and oil spill which occurred in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Mumbai. The spilled oil from the ship spread beyond Mumbai to Raigad District. Traces were noticed particularly between Uttan in Bhayandar and Gorai beach.

A boom in shipping is aggravating air pollution in China and other nations in east Asia, causing thousands of deaths a year in a region with eight of the world’s 10 biggest container ports, scienti
