Minister for Rural Development and Culture K.C. Joseph told the Assembly on Monday that the dairy sector was witnessing qualitative change after the present government came to power.

Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for Dairy and Community Development, the Minister said the milk production had gone up by 30 per cent after the government increased milk prices. While the price was increased by Rs.5 a litre, Rs.4.20 was passed on to the farmers.

After cement industry, CCI to deliver order on tyre companies soon

After having acted tough on cement companies for cartelisation, Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken up a suo-moto inquiry against milk retailing players. The milk retailers were alleged to have indulged into price cartelisation by making frequent price rise in a short span of time. The competition watchdog has decided to take an inquiry on its own to decide if the milk companies and cooperatives operational in the country are guilty of cartelisation or not.

The Kerala High Court has held that an appropriate legislation should be enacted to save the common man from unreasonable and arbitrary pricing of food articles by hotels and restaurants in the state. The court also suggested that a machinery should be constituted for regulating the prices of food articles.

With a huge wheat harvest across North India and massive pile-up of stocks in godowns not resulting in a drop in the price of flour, the Delhi Government has decided to step in yet again with the sale of its “Bhagidari atta” for providing people with wheat flour at a reasonable price.

Delhi Food & Civil Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf, who had a meeting with several mill owners on Monday, said the Government would be reintroducing its wheat flour scheme through a tender process for which the request for quotation (RFQ) would be issued in a week or 10 days.

New Delhi The food ministry has opposed the agriculture ministry's proposal to hike the support price of paddy by over 15% to Rs 1,250 per quintal for 2012-13, saying the move would result in increase in food subsidy bill.

The minimum support price (MSP) of paddy of common and 'A' grade varieties stood at Rs 1,080 and Rs 1,110 per quintal, respectively, in the 2011-12 crop year (July-June).
