Worldwide, cities and townships are facing many complex wastewater treatment issues. Although centralized sewers are seen as a preferred solution to wastewater problems, areas with centralized sewers discharding to surface waters, have been identified as source of many pollution problems. Lack of sufficient, even basic treatment is a risk to public health.

An attempt has been made to identify folklore medicinally important plants frequently used by rural communities of sacred groves and it environs of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. A total of 34 medicinal plants from 33 genera under 29 families were enumerated. Most of the plants are used for curing earache, skin diseases, fever, cold, headache, cough, urinary disorder, ulcer, etc.

Although batch composting of manure is very common throughout China at both large and small scales, there is little experience with composting of human waste in urban centres. This project, the first on thermal composting of human faeces under indoor controlled conditions, took place in a highdensity urban setting in Dongsheng, Erdos Municipality in Inner Mongolia, China.
