Continuing high rates of deforestation and forest degradation and the poor contribution of forests and forestry to poverty reduction are undermining efforts to promote sustainable forest management
(SFM) in many countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Groundwater supplies 60 per cent of the water for irrigation in India and 85 per cent of rural water supply relies upon groundwater. Accordingly, poverty reduction, rural development and sustainable food production in India rely upon the long-term availability of groundwater in sufficient quantity and quality. Efficient groundwater resource management is therefore of high priority in India.

In line with the request of the Twelfth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, this report follows the outline set out in the document Format and content of future status and trends reports on animal genetic resources.

The objective of this policy is to ensure faster economic development employment generation by sustainable use of the resources available in the state. The policy says special attention on promotion of small and medium enterprises to avert the adverse impact of global recession on industrialization in Madhya Pradesh.

The study on "Forests and Climate Change in the Asia-Pacific Region" provides assessments on impacts of climate change and adaptation options, highlighting adaptation needs, forest management options and estimations of adaptation costs.

Lack of food has been the source of many past and recent conflicts. Food insecurity has clearly been a factor behind outbreaks of social unrest or worse, yet conflict also has induced notable instances of food insecurity. Conflict often involves competition over control of the factors of food production, primarily land and water.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) notified the draft
"Plastics (Manufacture, Usage and Waste Management) Rules, 2009" to replace the Recycled Plastics Manufacture and Usage Rules, 1999 (amended in 2003) to regulate the manufacture and usage of plastic carry bags. The draft rules were widely published for public comments.

There has been much interest recently in promoting decentralization in the forestry sector in the belief that it would bring in downward accountability, which in turn would ensure economic efficiency, sustainability of the resource, and social and economic equity.
